About the University of North Carolina at Pembroke

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is a public university. It’s part of the University of North Carolina System. It uses the nicknames UNCP and UNC Pembroke. The university was established in 1887 as the Croatan Normal School.  It was named for the Native American tribe that once lived in the state. Though it changed its name a few more times, the school was one of the only in North Carolina to offer opportunities for Native Americans. UNCP has the accreditation that lets students get financial aid and the accreditation that applies to specific degree programs. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke Application Requirements

The application deadline for freshmen applying to UNCP is May first. Those who want to start in the spring need to apply by December first. UNCP charges a $55 fee and asks students to apply for a waiver if they cannot afford that fee. Students also need to apply with the UNC Pembroke application and have their high schools submit their transcripts. The university requires a standardized test score also. Any student who used the Early College Student program in North Carolina to attend classes will need to submit a college transcript. Grad students receive full admission to UNC Pembroke if they meet all admission requirements, including the $55 application fee and online application. They also need to send their official transcripts to the Graduate School. The university asks for transcripts from any schools the student attended in the last five years. Students need a grade point average of 3.0 in their undergraduate major or all the classes they took in their senior year or a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Some programs such as the MBA and social work programs ask for a score from an entrance exam if the student has a GPA below the minimum amount. Most programs ask for three letters of recommendation. At least one letter must come from an academic reference.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Full-time undergrads at UNC Pembroke pay $15,498.76 each year as a North Carolina resident and $19,498.76 as a nonresident. Though this includes their tuition and fees, it does not include the cost of on-campus living. Students need to live in a dorm during their freshmen year and purchase a meal plan. Grad students pay $4,698.38 every year for full-time enrollment as a North Carolina resident and $10,729.97 as a nonresident. They can subtract more than $1,300 from their annual costs if they do not need the health insurance that UNCP offers. The Graduate Student Travel Grant is a grant offered by UNCP for students who need to pay travel costs. Those students can also qualify for one of the assistantships if they take a minimum of nine credit hours. Students get $4,500 each semester and $9,000 a year.
