About Old Dominion University

Old Dominion University is a coeducational public research university in Norfolk, Virginia. The school derives its name from one of Virginia’s state nicknames, “The Old Dominion.” It was given to the state by King Charles II of England for its loyalty to the crown during the English Civil War. It was founded in 1930 as the Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary. ODU is now one of the largest postsecondary institutions in the state. It operates two additional satellite campuses in the Hampton Roads area. More than 25,000 students pursue degrees from ODU each year. Old Dominion University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award doctoral, education specialist, master’s, and bachelor’s degrees. The school earned its initial accreditation in 1966 and has been reaffirmed every renewal period since. Old Dominion University Application Requirements

Freshmen seeking a degree from Old Dominion University must submit an online application and pay a $50 nonrefundable application fee. Other required items include an official high school transcript or proof of GED as well as official SAT and/or SAT scores. Applicants may choose to submit additional items such as:

a 400-word essay on a topic of their choice
one to three letters of recommendation
an activity resume
their official Advanced Placement (AP) test scores or a dual enrollment transcript

Prospective graduate students are also required to complete an online application and pay a $50 application fee. ODU waives the fee if the applicant is an ODU alumnus or if he or she has paid this fee within the last 12 months. Each program’s requirements will vary, but most graduate-level degrees require applicants to submit:

letters of recommendation
essays
official graduate standardized test scores
current resumes
official transcripts from all previously attended institutions

Graduate students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in order to be admitted into a master’s-level program.

Tuition and Financial Aid

In most cases, the in-state rate for an undergraduate degree is $352 per credit hour. Out-of-state undergraduates will pay $982 per credit hour. The in-state graduate rate is $523 per credit hour. Out-of-state graduate students will pay $1,320 per credit hour. Old Dominion also charges selected mandatory fees for:
