About Lewis University
Lewis University is a private university located less than 30 miles from Chicago, Illinois. It was established in 1932 as the Holy Technical School. It initially offered aviation and technical programs that prepared students for working in major airports and for airlines across the country. The popularity of that program led to the school later becoming the Lewis Holy Name School of Aeronautics. The school shut down during World War II. It reopened in the late 1940s as the Lewis College of Science and Technology and admitted its first women. The school became Lewis College in the early 1960s and then Lewis University at the beginning of the next decade. The university still offers an aeronautics program. It’s popular with students because its campus is next to an airport. Students can take pilot lessons from trainers at the airport and complete internships there. The university now features four colleges and one school that offer opportunities for all types of students. Its School of Professional and Continuing Education has some of the online programs designed for adult students. Enrollment at Lewis University now includes more than 4,100 undergrads and nearly 2,000 graduate and post-graduate students.Lewis University Accreditation Details
The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) is just one of the organizations that grant accreditation to Lewis University. This accreditation applies to its undergrad and graduate education and teaching programs. Its nursing and business programs at both levels have accreditation. Lewis University received regional accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS).Lewis University Application Requirements
Lewis has an early response deadline of December 1 for applications. This deadline lets students know by the end of the year whether they can attend the university. The deadline for students who also want to apply for scholarships is February 1. The university also has a standard deadline of April 1 for all other prospective undergrads. Lewis will only accept applications through this deadline if it has not yet filled its slots for the new class. This is why it recommends that students submit their applications earlier. Prospective undergrads will pay a $40 application fee and submit an online application. They will also submit their transcripts and an official score from the ACT or SAT. New graduate sessions start every eight weeks. As long as the university receives all the information it requires and accepts a new student, that individual can start classes at the beginning of the next session. All grad students must submit their official transcripts and pay a $40 fee to submit the online application. Many programs also ask for a personal statement of two pages. The statement should explain what the student hopes to study and what they will do with that degree. Students also may need to submit letters of recommendation and a resume.Tuition and Financial Aid
Lewis has a fixed block tuition rate that lets all undergrads take 12 to 18 credits for a cost of $16,150 per semester, or $32,300 per year. Undergrads who take fewer credits and those who sign up for summer classes will pay $948 per credit hour instead. The graduate programs offered charge a rate that starts at $575 per credit hour and climbs to $800 per credit hour. Before applying for financial aid with the FAFSA, the university encourages students to look at some of its scholarships. These programs may require that students have a high school grade point average of 2.2 to 3.0 or higher. Some of these scholarships go to students with more need, but there are others available for minority students and single moms. To apply for scholarships, students usually need to submit the FAFSA. The university decides whether students need one of its scholarships in addition to the other financial aid that they get. These often includes grants and loans. Though graduate students can get loans too, they qualify for unsubsidized loans rather than the subsidized loans given to undergrads. Students applying to any of the Lewis University degree programs can apply for financial aid.Related Resources:
