Undergraduate and Graduate Degree Programs at ISU

Indiana State University appears in our ranking of the 20 Best Affordable Online Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering. Indiana State University is a comprehensive university in Terre Haute. It offers both undergrad and graduate programs. Undergrads can choose from more than 100 degree programs, including several pre-professional programs. They can major in pre-med or pre-law. The university’s textiles, apparel, and merchandising program is a unique option. It features courses such as:
  • Fundamentals of Apparel Design
  • Fashion Consumers
  • Survey of Fashion Industry Practices
Students majoring in interior architecture will take classes that include:
  • Introduction to Interior Architecture Design
  • Survey of Art History
  • Construction and Detailing
Students can earn a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degrees in fields ranging from accounting or engineering to theater or music education. Many of these programs prepare students for  graduate level studies. Graduate students can enroll in one of more than 40 different programs in such areas as:
  • genetic counseling
  • criminal justice
  • business administration
  • accounting
  • psychology
  • technology management
Some of these programs allow students to earn either a Master of Arts or a Master of Science in the same subject. Students in select programs have other options, too. The university’s biology program allows students to do a thesis in their final years. Or they can take more classes and skip the thesis requirement. Some programs require that students do fieldwork. Indiana State University offers a Master of Social Work program that features 60 credits of classes. These include four credits of practicum work where students work in an agency or organization.

About Indiana State University

Indiana State University is one of the oldest colleges in the state. It was founded in 1865 as a teacher training school. It became the Indiana State Teachers College in the late 1920s and Indiana State College in the early 1960s. It became Indiana State University in 1965. Now called ISU by many, the university has its own Center for Student Success that offers free tutoring and other  help for struggling students. The Cunningham Memorial Library gives students access to hundreds of thousands of digital records and thousands of books and resource materials. More than 2,200 post-graduate students and more than 10,000 undergrads are enrolled.

Indiana State University Accreditation Details

ISU is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS). NSACS accreditation also allows the university to accept credits that students earned from any other college or university with regional accreditation. Indiana State University Application Requirements

The Office of Admissions at ISU offers students two ways to apply. Those who live near the campus can stop by in person and fill out an application. This lets them ask questions and get help from the university’s admissions counselors. Students can also use an online version of the application. The university charges a $25 application fee. Undergrads must also submit an official high school transcript, and an official ACT or SAT score. The deadline for applications is June 1 for those who want to start in the fall. ISU requires that undergrads have a high school GPA of 2.5 or higher. ISU has different requirements for graduate students. It will notify students of its decision within six weeks of receiving their applications and required documents. Students must submit the university’s graduate school application online and pay the $65 attached fee. They will then submit an official credential evaluation and their transcripts. ISU grad programs may ask prospective students to submit:
  • an essay
  • resume
  • writing sample or other information
Some programs also have an interview requirement.

Tuition and Financial Aid

ISU charges a flat tuition rate of $8,890 per year for Indiana residents. If they take less than 12 credits in a semester, the student will pay a rate based on the number of credits taken. Those who take more than 18 credits in a semester will pay $10,344 per year. Nonresidents pay $19,363 per year to take up to 18 credits or $23,216 if they go above that limit. ISU offers a discount for students from Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois and other Midwestern states. Those students pay $11,380 per year when taking up to 18 credits and $13,228 per year to take more than 18 credits each semester. The university also charges different rates for graduate students based on their home states. These students pay $412 per credit hour as an Indiana resident and $809 per credit hour as a nonresident. Students living anywhere in the Midwest receive a discount that lowers their costs to $527 per credit hour. This is the same rate the university charges students who live in another state and take online classes. Any undergrad who takes at least 30 credits over the course of the school year can apply for an ISU scholarship. There are 12 competitive scholarships that go to students who complete different requirements and have higher test scores and grade point averages than other incoming students . The university also awards 15 scholarships to students who live in different states or meet other requirements. Once the university receives the student’s FAFSA, it will automatically determine if he or she qualifies for one. ISU offers scholarships for graduate students too. Some of these go to students in the Midwest and will lower their tuition costs. Others provide students with money they can put towards their housing or other costs. The university has some assistantships and fellowships available.
