About Fayetteville State University

Fayetteville State University was founded shortly after the Civil War in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The university is a historically black public regional university. It was founded after two local schools in the African-American community were consolidated into one school called the Howard School. The university was the first state-sponsored institution of higher learning for African-American teachers in the South. The university’s campus covers 200 acres. Its official colors are white and blue. Athletics are played in NCAA Division II games. The university is part of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Students play as the Broncos.
