Eastern New Mexico University: Array of Quality Programs

Eastern New Mexico University appears in our ranking of the 25 Best Bachelor’s in Engineering Online Degrees. Eastern New Mexico University offers more than 90 degree programs. Thirty of these are also available in an online format. The school awards:

The graduate school grants degrees in 24 programs and certifications in four areas. Fourteen of the graduate degree programs are entirely online. The university requires all undergraduate students to complete 41 hours of general education courses in addition to the core courses for their majors and electives. In general, a bachelor’s degree requires 120 semester-hours for graduation. Undergraduate students must declare a major by the time they have completed 45 semester-hours. Graduate students have until the end of the first semester to declare a major. Eastern New Mexico offers a broad array of agricultural programs. Among these are:

The school offers Bachelor of Applied Science degrees in Career and Technical Education and some Business disciplines. One of the most popular programs at Eastern New Mexico University is Communicative Disorders. The university awards both the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in this discipline. At the undergraduate level, the degree program includes pre-professional instruction and prepares students to enter graduate school. The Master’s program is taught in a hybrid format and requires two years of full-time study to complete.

About Eastern New Mexico University

This school was approved by the legislature in 1927 but did not hold classes until 1934. From its inception until 1940 the school offered only two-year degrees. The university was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1947. It was officially named Eastern New Mexico University in 1955. ENMU is New Mexico’s largest regional comprehensive university. The 2017 total enrollment was 6,027. The campus in Portales is the only one that awards four-year degrees. Campuses in Roswell and Ruidoso award only associate degrees. The school has been designated by the federal government as a Hispanic-Serving University. It is a member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. The student/faculty ratio is 17:1. Because it serves adult learners as well as traditional students, the school offers many classes in the evenings or online. Video conference courses are also held at:

Eastern New Mexico University Accreditation Details

Eastern New Mexico University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Higher Learning Commission. The music programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) accredits the business programs at Eastern New Mexico University. The speech and speech pathology degrees are accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). ACEN, The Accrediting Council for Education in Nursing, accredits the nursing programs. Teacher education is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The social work programs are accredited by CSWE, the Council on Social Work Education.

Eastern New Mexico University Application Requirements

Students applying as first-time freshmen should complete the online application, or print the application, complete it and mail it to the school. They should also fill out the FAFSA form and the Eastern New Mexico scholarship application. Freshman students should arrange to have their high schools, and any colleges where they completed coursework, submit the official transcripts to the university. Official SAT or ACT scores must also be submitted. There is no application fee. Students applying to the graduate school should complete the formal application as well. Then they should submit the transcripts of any post-secondary coursework they completed along with the application. If the student is eligible for acceptance, the graduate school will forward the file to the program of their choice. Students may be required to:
  • submit GRE and GMAT scores
  • complete a writing proficiency and competency exam
  • submit two letters of recommendation
Depending upon the program, students may also have to fulfill other requisites.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate tuition for resident students at Eastern New Mexico University is $1,830 per semester.  Student fees are $1,128. The cost of attendance includes room and board and an estimated $450 for books and supplies, bringing the total for one semester to $6,887. Graduate students who are New Mexico residents taking 12-18 credit hours pay a semester rate of $3,389. Eighty-five dollars in fees are assessed as well. Including residence hall, meal plan, books, and supplies, the estimated graduate cost of attendance is $7,470. Most students will need assistance to pay their education obligations. The university uses information  from the scholarship forms submitted with the application, along with FAFSA data, to determine eligibility for university merit grants and scholarships. The federal government offers TEACH grants in addition to the Pell and SEOG awards. These are grants to assist those in education programs. New Mexico funds a College Affordability Grant of $1,000 to students with financial need who do not qualify for other scholarships. Those students with significant financial need may qualify for the New Mexico Student Incentive Grant. There is also a New Mexico Lottery Scholarship. It’s awarded to students who enter college immediately after high school graduation. In addition to these federal and state grants, there are several scholarships available through the school for students in specified programs or activities. Outside scholarships can be found through an Internet search of scholarship portals. These include grants funded by:
  • private individuals
  • service organizations
  • corporations
Most students will still have a debt after applying scholarship and grant money. The federal government awards Perkins loans, student and parent PLUS loans through FAFSA. These have a low interest and the option to defer repayment until after graduation. Students should note that though payments aren’t due until a later date, interest accrues from the date of inception. Private lending institutions also offer student loans but the interest on these may be higher than the federal loans. Financial Aid Counselors at Eastern New Mexico University can help students put together a package of loans, grants and work options that will reduce the amount of student debt they have at graduation.
