About Barry University

Barry University originated in 1939 when the Bishop of St. Augustine, Rev. Patrick Barry, purchased a 40-acre tract. He opened a women’s college with his siblings Mary and William. The next summer, an inaugural class of 10 enrolled at the Barry College of Women for two-year degrees. On January 1, 1947, Barry College received full regional accreditation status. In 1957, the Master of Arts in Education became the college’s first graduate program. In 1960, Barry joined the Association of Independent Colleges of Florida. In 1967, the Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library aas founded. It has  a 6,000-volume Rare Book Room. On October 17, 1975, the Board of Trustees voted to allow male undergrad enrollment. In 1981, the Barry University name was adopted. In 1984, the Andreas School of Business was launched. Fifteen years later, the Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law was established. By 2011, Barry University had Virgin Islands programs available in St. Croix. Barry University is endowed for $40.1 million. There are 735 faculty. There are about  7,300 students from 46 states and 83 countries. In 2017, Barry received the Florida Campus Compact’s Campus of the Year Award. In 2018, the University won its fifth straight NCAA Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence. Barry was the American Bar Association’s 2018 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program Award recipient. The U.S. News & World Report named Barry:

Barry University Application Requirements

Barry University admission is classified “moderately selective” by Peterson’s. Only 4,350 of the 5,110 Fall 2017 applicants were chosen for 85 percent acceptance. First-year Buccaneers must finish a suitable college-prep secondary curriculum or the GED/HiSET equivalent. The Class of 2021 presented a mean cumulative GPA of 3.04. The middle 50th percentile had SAT scores of 430-510 for Reading and 420-500 for Math. Mid-range admitted ACT scores were 18-21. Honors Program entrants must have a minimum:
  • 3.7 GPA
  • 28 ACT
  • 1310 SAT
Eligible transfers should have 12+ non-remedial credits with GPAs above 2.25. International undergrads prove English ability with at least 61 TOEFL iBT or 6.0 IELTS scores. The Graduate Admission Office has varying criteria beyond the bachelor’s degree. M.S. in Counseling cohorts need an overall 3.0 GPA or better with psychology prerequisites. The M.S. in Occupational Therapy seeks 3.2 GPAs and 40 observation hours. Andreas School of Business programs require GMAT scores over 400. Barry University conducts bachelor’s admission on a rolling basis. Note Traditional BSN entrants must apply before June 15th for Fall or October 15th for Spring. Priority deadlines for international undergrads are May 1st and December 1st. The Graduate Admission Office has program-specific dates. For instance, the Juris Doctor accepts candidates from September 15th to May 1st. M.S. in Biomedical Sciences cohorts must file by June 1st, October 15th, or March 31st. The PA Program closes on December 1st each year. Doctor of Podiatric Medicine candidates are reviewed until June 30th. Accordingly, complete the Barry or Common Application online for $30 by credit card or e-check. Forward official transcripts to 11300 NE 2nd Avenue in Miami Shores, FL 33161. Send testing results via SAT/GRE code 5053, ACT code 0718, or MCAT code 0634. Attach supplemental materials, such as:

Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2019-20, Barry University is charging traditional full-time undergrads $14,850 each term. Part-time bachelor’s tuition is $925 per credit. The School of Professional & Career Education has a $1,950 portfolio fee. Distance education courses add a $125 fee. Living at the “Magic City” campus’ housing like Weber Hall adds $3,145 to $4,665 by room type. Residential meal plans are $2,195 extra each semester. Barry budgets $1,500 for books and $4,284 for miscellaneous. Annual undergrad study equals $46,898 on-campus and $34,448 at home. The Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Med Certificate has a flat-rate $12,900 price. Master’s tuition is generally $990 per credit. Incoming Ph.D. cohorts pay $1,125 per credit. The School of Podiatric Medicine costs $38,960 each year. Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law attendance is $37,280 annually. The Physician Assistant Program bills $33,795 by year too. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that the Financial Aid Office  links 100 percent of new Barry Bucs to tuition assistance. This averages $24,286 apiece for $14.62 million total.
