About Albany State University

A historically black college, Albany State University is located in Albany, Georgia, on a 231-acre campus. Founded in 1903, the school began as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute. In 1917, the school was turned over to Georgia, becoming the two-year Georgia Normal and Agricultural College. It became part of the University System of Georgia in 1931 and was granted four-year status in 1943, which is when its name changed to Albany State College. In 1996, the school was upgraded to university status and assumed its current name. The university’s average enrollment of undergraduate students is around 6,000. Albany State University has been ranked as the #1 Historically Black College or University in Georgia by U.S. News and World Report. That publication also ranks the school 55th in its Top Performers on Social Mobility and 45th in its overall rankings of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Additionally, Albany State University has been ranked #96-122 in the publication’s 2020 Best Colleges – Regional Universities South rankings.

The university has held regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, or SACS, since 1951. Additional accreditations that are held by some of the school’s programs and departments include:

Albany State University Application Requirements

Albany State University has an acceptance rate of 90 percent, which means that it accepts the majority of applicants. Applicants must meet the school’s high school educational requirements, which consist of:

• Four units of English
• Four units of mathematics
• Four units of natural sciences
• Three units of social sciences
• Two units of the same foreign language

The application deadline for the Albany State University is July 1st of each year. The school doesn’t impose minimums for tests like the SAT and ACT, but the average SAT score for students who are admitted is 830 and the average ACT score for students who are admitted is 16. The average GPA for students who are admitted to the university is 2.94.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Full-time, in-state students at Albany State University pay an average of $5,934 per semester to attend the school for undergraduate studies. Out-of-state undergraduate students who attend the school full-time pay an average of $16,656 per semester. Graduate students attending Albany State University pay an average of $5,308 per semester in-state and an average of $15,586 per semester out-of-state. The school also offers a robust array of online, or distance learning, degree programs. The average tuition per credit hour for in-state students is $105 for associate degree programs; $177 for bachelor’s degree programs; and $300 for graduate degree programs. The average amount that is awarded in grants is $6,730 per student; for loans, the average amount is $5,963 per student. To qualify for financial aid while attending this school, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, after acceptance. The amount that is awarded is based on a number of criteria, but the amount is based on a student’s financial need. Private, merit-based awards are available as well. Most students receive a combination of different types of financial aid to reduce their out-of-pocket costs for college, including loans, grants, and scholarships.
