About the University of Massachusetts-Lowell

UMass Lowell is a public institution. The university’s origin as two independent institutions that would later combine started in the 1890s. The original two institutions were called the Lowell Technological Institute and Lowell State College. Having the second-largest campus of universities in Massachusetts, this university’s campus includes 142 acres located on the Merrimack River. This campus is home to many men and women’s athletic teams. The most popular being the baseball and basketball teams. The university’s athletes are nicknamed the River Hawks. An athletic alumnus of note is Craig Charron, who is a former ice hockey player for the university. As an alumnus, Charron is a former professional ice hockey player. University of Massachusetts-Lowell’s Accreditation Details

The New England Commission of Higher Education fully accredits UMass Lowell. The 2020 edition of US News and World Report ranked UMass Lowell 179th for national universities and 89th for public universities. In 2019, UMass Lowell was reported to have some of the best online programs by US News and World Report. A few of the online disciplines that were specifically awarded were the graduate business, education, criminal justice, and computer information technology programs. UMass Lowell was ranked 133rd for best colleges for veterans. The university proudly welcomes military students and veterans. These students have many additional benefits provided by the university. Veterans are eligible for specifically allocated financial aid.

University of Massachusetts-Lowell’s Application Requirements

Admission to UMass Lowell varies from program to program, but past statistics on those admitted to the university are a useful tool. The average GPA for first-year undergraduate students in 2018 was 3.59. These same students had an average SAT score of 1239 for Evidence-Based Reading and Math. Successful undergraduate applicants must complete the following in their senior year of secondary school:

• English: 4 Courses
• Mathematics: 4 courses (Algebra I & II and Geometry or Trigonometry, or comparable coursework) including mathematics during the final year of high school
• Sciences: 3 courses (drawn from Natural Science and/or Physical Science and/or Technology/Engineering), including 3 courses with laboratory work
• Social Sciences: 2 Courses (including 1 course in US history)
• Foreign Language: 2 Courses (in a single language)
• Electives: 2 Courses (from the above subjects or from the arts & humanities or computer sciences)

The graduate admission requirements vary between colleges within the university. Broadly, writing samples, letters of recommendation, statements of purpose, resumes, and state licensures will be required of graduate applicants as supporting documents. When evaluating students for admission, UMass Lowell’s policymakers and admission counselors holistically examine the factors that may have played detrimental roles towards a student’s GPA or SAT score. The university offers alternative pathways to admissions. The Navitas UMass Lowell admission program is an independent admission route for international students who are unable to meet the standard requirements.

Tuition and Financial Aid

For the 2019-2020 school year, full-time undergraduate students paid $15,648 in tuition and associated fees as in-state students or $33,574 out-of-state students. Associated fees with tuition include the campus technology fee and the student activity fee. UMass Lowell offers a special financial arrangement for students who qualify for the New England Regional Program. New England Regional Program students paid $27,188 in tuition for the 2019-2020 full-time undergraduate year. Likewise, graduate students pay $15,160 if coming from within the state or $26,940 if coming from outside in tuition and fees. Additionally, tuition is calculated using the number of credits an online and continuing education student takes. The cost per credit differs between faculties. Whereas the Manning School of Business’ Graduate Online Course cost $655 per credit, the majority of the undergraduate face-to-face courses cost $340 per credit. Any possible changes to tuition costs are dependent on the UMass Board of Trustees. UMass Lowell has financial aid programs ranging from loans, scholarships, grants, credit waivers, student employment, and reimbursement programs. If studying in eligible programs, students can apply for financial aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
