The State University of New York – Canton functions as both a junior and a senior college. As a junior college, it offers the two-year associate degree programs usually found in community colleges. About the State University of New York – Canton

The State University of New York – Canton, is a public university in Canton, New York. It was established in 1906. It was originally a branch of St. Lawrence University called the School of Agriculture. It became the New York State Agricultural and Technical Institute in the early 1940s. It changed to the State University of New York Agricultural and Technical College at Canton in the 1980s. The State University of New York later changed the name of the campus again in the late 1980s to the State University of New York College of Technology at Canton. As part of the SUNY system, it often uses the name SUNY Canton. Though SUNY Canton once offered only two-year degree programs in agricultural studies. its curriculum changed after becoming part of the SUNY system to include bachelor’s programs in various fields. The university also offers a small number of certificate options. Some of the degree programs allow students to take classes and do special projects with other colleges and universities in the surrounding region. These include its forest technology and environmental science programs. SUNY Canton only offers undergraduate degree programs. It has an enrollment of more than 3,000 students.

SUNY Canton has accreditation that applies to many of its degree and certificate programs.  Accreditation comes from:

  • American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)
  • Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)

State University of New York – Canton Application Requirements

When students apply to SUNY Canton, they need to create accounts and select their future programs from a provided list. They will then view all the application requirements of that program. The final application deadline for the fall semester is April 1. However,  the university recommends that students submit their applications by December 15, especially if they will also apply for financial aid. Though the only requirement beyond the application is a transcript, some programs also require an essay. The application will show students whether they need to write an essay. This requirement helps the university see whether the student has the strong writing skills they need in college. Students can write on topics such as a traumatic event that impacted their lives or how a past experience will help them in college. They also need to provide transcripts to show that they took high school courses preparing them for college and that they earned or will earn a high school diploma. Once they apply, they can log in and check on the status of their applications.

Tuition and Financial Aid

SUNY Canton charges all undergrads who are New York residents a rate of $3,435 per semester in tuition alone. With fees and room and board charges added to this rate, those students pay $24,753 each year. Though online students pay the same rate as NY residents, they pay less in fees, which will bring their totals to $4,300 a semester. Nonresidents pay different rates based on whether they enroll in an associate’s or a bachelor’s program. The two-year programs charge a tuition rate of $5,420 per semester. This  increases to $8,325 per semester for students in a bachelor’s program. SUNY Canton offers reduced tuition for nonresidents in its online programs. All students can also purchase health insurance for $1,096 a semester. Students who are NY residents can apply for the Excelsior Scholarship offered by the state. As long as their parents make a combined income of less than $100,000 a year, they receive scholarships that cover their tuition. Students only need to pay out of pocket for their room and board and other expenses. There are also more than 20 other scholarships and grants go to students. One is an emergency grant designed to make college more affordable for veterans. Another covers the total cost of attendance for STEM majors who agree to live and work in NY when they graduate. Students enrolling in or applying to any of the State University of New York – Canton degree programs can also apply for government financial aid with the FAFSA.
