About Southeast Missouri State University

Southeast Missouri State University originated in 1873 when the Legislature formed the Third District Normal School for teachers’ training. It was initially housed in the Lorimier School. It relocated to Academic Hall designed by World’s Fair architect Jerome Bibb Legg in 1906. During Willard Vandiver’s 1900s tenure, he coined the term “Show Me” that inspired today’s state nickname. In 1946, it transitioned into the Southeast Missouri State College for broader bachelor’s study. It was given university status in 1972. SEMO had expanded its 328-acre Cape Girardeau campus to 22 buildings like Kent Library by 1975. Two decades later, Southeast Missouri State acquired St. Vincent’s Seminary to build the Rivers Campus for the Holland School of Arts. In 1998, SEMO launched the Annual Clark Terry Jazz Festival. Southeast Online also began in 2004 for 24/7 Moodle access. Southeast Missouri State University now delivers 1,303 courses for 11,071 students from 65 nations. It has more than 100 clubs like Model United Nations. The U.S. News & World Report ranked SEMO the 90th best Midwest college and 20th top public university.

Southeast Missouri State is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA).  This nonprofit 19-state Northern Plains accreditor is recognized by the U.S. Education Department and Missouri Department of Higher Education (MDHE). Southeast Missouri State University Application Requirements

Enrolling at Southeast Missouri State University is labeled “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s. It has since an 85 percent acceptance rate. First-year students must graduate from licensed high schools or achieve a 2500 GED and 75 HSE score. Admission becomes test-optional for secondary GPAs above 3.5. Otherwise, freshmen need at least 2.0 GPA, 18 ACT, and 940 SAT marks. Lower grades are considered provisionally for the Academic Coaching Program. Current undergrads skip freshman criteria by transferring 24+ non-remedial credits with 2.0 GPAs or better. For nursing licensure the RN-BSN Online seeks higher 2.8 GPAs in prerequisites like:

Online 30-credit Applied Technology BAS entrants must already hold Associate of Applied Science degrees. The School of Graduate Studies requires qualifying four-year bachelor’s majors with cumulative GPAs above 3.0 in the last two semesters. For instance, the Communication Disorders MA necessitates nine prerequisites, including Phonetics and Language Development. Online MBA cohorts must reach a GMAT Index score over 1000. GRE minimums are currently 147 for Verbal and Quantitative plus 3.5 for Analytical Writing. Southeast Missouri State University recommends freshmen apply before the December 1st Early Action and March 1st Scholarship deadlines. Bachelor’s transfers have until:
  • July 1st for Fall
  • November 1st for Spring
  • March 1st for Summer
Generally, domestic post-grads are considered until:

  • November 21st
  • May 15th
Non-U.S. learners meeting the 61 TOEFL iBT score have July 1st and November 1st deadlines. Program-specific cutoffs include October 31st for the Criminal Justice MS and February 1st for the School Counseling MA. Prospective studentss use Firefox or Chrome to complete the SEMO and Common Applications online for $30 ($40 if international). Tuition and Financial Aid

For 2018-19, Southeast Missouri State University is billing full-time Show Me State undergrads $3,126 per term or $6,253 annually. Non-resident bachelor’s tuition is $5,995 each semester or $11,991 every year. General fees add $1,164. The Textbook Rental Program costs $363. Living at the Cape Girardeau campus’ dorms incurs $7,828 to $9,508 for room and board. Other resident fees include:

Traditional bachelor’s attendance equals $15,608 in-state and $21,346 out-of-state. Southeast Online courses are only $284 per credit.
