About the Florida Institute of Technology

Florida Institute of Technology originated in 1954 when Virginia Wood, Elizabeth Nutting, and Margaret Hutchinson opened the University of Melbourne. Four years later, NASA scientist Dr. Jerome Keuper started the Brevard Engineering College with an inaugural group of 154 . In 1961, the two institutes merged onto a 40-acre campus donated by V.C. Brownlie. First accredited in 1964, BEC transformed into the Florida Institute of Technology in 1966.  Florida Tech later established its first off-campus degree at Patuxent River Naval Station. The Extended Studies Department began in 1996 for programs from Alabama to New Jersey and eventually online. In 2017, FIT attracted the Florida Academy of Sciences and Aldrin Space Institute. Admission to Florida Institute of Technology is classified “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s. In Fall 2017 its acceptance rate was 63 percent. First-year students must show achievement in a strong high school curriculum or the GED. On average, freshmen hold a 3.63 GPA, 1260 SAT, and 27 ACT mark. Also, taking the SAT II in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics is preferred. Test-optional transfer enrollment mandates 24+ college credits with 2.5 GPAs. The SmartTrack MBA chooses seniors with 95+ credits and 3.4 GPAs overall. Clinical Psychology PsyD cohorts need 18 prerequisite credits like Personality and Statistics. Post-grads submit a median 151 verbal and 147 quantitative GRE score. Florida Institute of Technology has rolling undergrad admission. National Decision Day is May 1st and Orientation is August 13th. International deadlines are June 8th for Fall, October 14th for Spring, and April 1st for Summer.
